Our History
The Sore Spots story begins in 2001 when Leah Sharpe (previously Gerrard) was the first in Halifax to introduce massage therapy within a hotel setting. Although the initial studio space was tiny – only 164 square feet -- its small size lent itself to providing a client-focused boutique-style experience. The smallness of this small business also meant that Sore Spots has endeavored since the beginning to provide the high standard of service associated with what clients could expect from a five-star spa experience.
Current owner Jamie Lynn Chediac began her journey at Sore Spots in 2002, when she received her very first massage from then-owner Leah Sharpe. At the time, Jamie had already decided to pursue an education in massage therapy and was looking to expand her understanding of massage. “Gearing up for student life, I literally collected money from my ‘piggy bank’ to make sure I could experience first-hand what I was about to embark on in my massage therapy program,” says Jamie. “I remember at the time feeling the weight of a lifetime of stress being lifting off my body by professional, caring hands.” In Jamie’s experience, she truly felt that Leah’s treatment “relieved my mind, spirit, and sore spots too”, which was the Sore Spots motto. Jamie notes that “this initial experience instilled in me a high standard of massage therapy care that I strive to uphold not just for myself, but for all our providing therapists.”
In 2006, Jamie took over ownership of this little company that could, making some small aesthetic changes to the original Sore Spots studio layout. In 2015, with a little perseverance, Jamie added two additional treatments spaces. Now in 2018, the not-so-tiny studio expands again with the welcome addition of its Dartmouth location.
For the last 17+ years, Sore Spots’ progress has been a slow and steady form of success - sprinkled with a few brilliant business missteps. The studio always comes back to the importance of helping curate healing space for every body, syncing as a team and caring for the community. Thank you for choosing Sore Spots. Let us help create healing space for all.
